Evenly decorated with 'pricking' or 'notching' around the upper section of the exterior, the pottery bowl would have required the potter's superb attention to detail and most skilled execution. While other 'pricked' examples from the Yangshao culture are known, such as a similar but smaller bowl (h. 8.5 cm) from the Meiyintang collection, illustrated in Regina Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, Vol. III, London, 2006, no. 1018, there are comparatively fewer 'pricked' pottery vessels than painted or other undecorated monochrome vessels of the same period.
