An Egyptian Bronze Figure of an Ibis

Late Period, 664-30 B.C.


sacred to the god Thoth, striding on an integral rectangular base with head held high, a ribbed collar at the base of the neck, the talons and tail feathers incised, the eyes inlaid, a mortise on top of the base for insertion of a now missing figure.

Height 20.5 cm.

probably Stefanos Lagonico (1890-1943), in Alexandria by 1925, in France and Switzerland by 1937
Jean Stephano Lagonico (1933-1981), Aix-en-Provence, prior to March 14th, 1970, probably by descent from the above
his wife Francine Auriau-Durbec, by inheritance
acquired at auction in France by the present owner
The figure once facing the ibis could have represented the seated goddess Maat or a priest kneeling in adoration.
