The Property of a European Collector

A large Imari vase

Edo period, late 17th century


the oviform vase with tall neck and everted rim, applied with two dragon handles, decorated in iron-red, green, aubergine and black enamels and gilt, with a wide band of chrysanthemums and foliage, beneath a narrow band of geometric design, the shoulder with two lobed panels depicting lakeside landscapes bordered by fish among swirling waters and aquatic plants, the neck with a further band of chrysanthemums, cherry blossoms to the inner rim, the dragon-handles in iron red, gilt paper label to the interior Japanisch, Palace Liechtenstein paper label to the base
