Description
Francesco Petrarca
Canzoniere e Trionfi. Venice: Filippo di Pietro, 14 August 1482
Chancery folio (316 x 207mm.), 135 leaves (of 146), [*⁶] a⁸⁺¹ b⁸ c⁶ d-m⁸ n-o⁶ p-q⁸ r⁸⁺¹ s⁸, 39 lines, roman type, later morocco, early manuscript foliation at lower right hand corner, lacking 11 leaves (*1-5, b1, k7, p1, r5, s7-8), some staining or browning, a few leaves with extensive paper repairs (particularly at beginning and end)
A large-margined if defective copy of this uncommon edition of Petrarch. There is a page of manuscript notes in Italian on a flyleaf at the front, quoting from a 1722 catalogue of Petrarch editions. Inserted in the volume is a letter from Dennis Rhodes of the British Library, dated 1978, confirming that this defective copy is indeed the 1482 Filippo di Pietro edition.
Some of the missing text is supplied by photographs from the copy in the Biblioteca Angelica.
