CORK, HORSEHIDE, YARN
Circa 1920s
There have been several home run hitting duos throughout baseball history – Mantle/Maris, Mathews/Aaron, Canseco/McGwire – but none have been as revered or remain as distinguished as Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. The two legends were teammates from 1925 to 1934, giving the Yankees an unbeatable one-two punch that brought them three World Championships. This ball was signed during possibly the greatest season in baseball history when the 1927 Yankees would win the then-league record 110 games on their way to sweeping the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series. The Yankees' 110 victories broke the previous American League Mark mark of 105 and would stand as the American League single-season record until it was broken in 1954 by the Cleveland Indians. But counting their World Series sweep, the 1927 Yankees had a total record of 114–44, which is still the all-time highest single-season winning percentage (.721) in American League history. This Yankees team was known for its feared lineup, which was nicknamed “Murderers’ Row” and is considered by many to be the greatest baseball team of all time.
In addition to Ruth and Gehrig, the ball is also signed by various members of the 1927 Chicago White Sox team. The ball comes with an LOA from James Spence Authentication in regards to the signatures.
