Description

Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849)

The Jewel River in Musashi Province (Bushu Tamagawa)

Edo period, 19th century

woodblock print, from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjurokkei), signed Hokusai Iitsu hitsu (Brush of Hokusai Iitsu), published by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudo), blue outline, circa 1831

Horizontal oban: 25.6 x 37.4 cm., 10 x 14¾ in.

The Tama River is shown partially illuminated by the hazy light filtering through the clouds above. With an oarsmen at the helm and passengers huddled in the prow, a boat crosses to the opposite bank where a snow-capped Mount Fuji emerges toweringly from a band of suyarigasumi [lit. spear mist]. In the foreground, a solitary man leads his horse along the river's edge, stopping for a while as the horse bows to take a drink from the river.
