Description

of shallow round form with an everted rim, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, viridian green and relief red, the centre with eight staggered rows of S-curved clouds each containing two red spots on a blue ground, the rim with green zig-zag abstract pattern, green circular and leafy motifs to the underside

A related jug dated circa 1580-85 is in the The Ömer Koç Collection (see Bilgi 2015, p.434, cat. no.194) and an Iznik dish with comparable stylised cloud design is in the Musée National de la Renaissance, France, also dated circa 1580 (inv. no. E.CI 8491(DS 2305), published in Hitzel & Jacotin 2005p.257, cat. no.388). Identical borders can be found on other dishes from the same period; see, for example, one in the Musée National de la Renaissance (inv. no.E.CI 8245(DS 2253), in Hitzel & Jacotin 2005, p.250, cat. no.376) and another sold in these rooms, 9 October 2012, lot 150.
