Description

Bruch, Max

Fine photograph portrait of the composer with an autograph musical quotation signed ("Max Bruch")

the portrait by Adolf Eckslein's Verlag, Berlin-Charlottenburg, image size 25 x 18.5cm, overall size 34.5 x 30.7cm, the autograph musical quotation, mounted below the image, comprising four bars from Bruch's ballad Schön Ellen, Op.24, notated in brown ink on a single hand-drawn stave, signed and inscribed below ("Seinem jungen Freunde Herrn Curt Börner zur Erinnerung Max Bruch..."), Berlin-Friedenau, 29 January 1909

Bruch's heroic ballad Schön Ellen, Op.24 (1867) was one of the most frequently performed choral works of the nineteenth century. Bruch's dedicatee was apparently the pianist and composer Kurt Börner (b. 1877).
