Conceived in 1916; this cast executed in 1966 as number 7 from an edition of 8.

Paul Haesaerts, Renoir, Sculptor, New York, 1947, pl. XXIX, illustration of another cast

Exh. Cat., New York, Charles E. Slatkin Galleries, Renoir, Degas, 1958, no. 80, pl. LIV, illustration of the plaster model (titled Water)

Ambroise Vollard, Pierre-Auguste Renoir: Paintings, Pastels and Drawings, San Francisco, 1989, p. 105, no. 419, illustration of the plaster model

Exh. Cat., Paris, Grand Palais (and traveling), Renoir au XX siècle, 2010, no. 93, pp. 350-51, illustration of another cast

Richard Guino executed several versions of these figures under Renoir’s direction in preparation for large-scale statues (although only one form was eventually produced in a monumental version.)

The plaster models for these bronzes, commissioned by Vollard in 1916, remained in the possession of Vollard and then his heirs until Charles E. Slatkin Galleries purchased them in the late 1950s.

A small bronze edition was authorized by the heirs of Renoir and of Vollard in December 1958 and was cast by Valsuani before the end of 1966. Though up to 26 casts were authorized, only a small number were actually cast.
