Yang Jiechang, together with other contemporary Chinese artists, challenges the calligraphic tradition and produces striking iconoclastic works that deal with ink, language and meaning. Initially studying with Buddhist and Daoist masters after his graduation from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, Yang was later influenced by the Dada movement, leading him to create abstract compositions with ink in the 1980s. In 1989 the artist participated in the seminal show Magiciens de la Terre at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, subsequently moving to France.

Yang’s black monochrome works are made up of multiple accumulated layers of ink. Indeed, for some of his works the artist mixes soy sauce and Chinese medicinal powders into the ink to create a thickness and a mesmerizing 3D effect. Like his Song predecessors, his paintings are able to recreate the physical and mental universe with just one tone—black. In this series, Yang combines traditional Eastern and Western modes of representation, writing roman letters with ink and brush in a calligraphic manner.

楊詰蒼是眾多挑戰書法傳統的當代中國藝術家之一，他的作品徹底地一反傳統，探討水墨、語言和意義。他從廣州美術學院畢業後，隨多位佛道大師參禪修道，後來受達達主義運動影響，在八十年代開始創作抽象水墨。1989年他入選巴黎龐畢度中心舉行的跨國大展「大地魔術師」，其後移居法國。

楊氏以積墨法創作水墨，墨色濃厚。實際上，他在部分作品用墨甚至會混合醬油或中草藥粉，產生濃重沉雄的立體感，深邃迷人。他的畫作別具宋人遺韻，僅以墨色之黑就展現外在的筆墨精神和內在心境。他在此系列結合東西傳統的表意方式，以水墨筆意書寫羅馬字母，意趣盎然。
