The watches in the Lumen line of limited editions have proven to be some of the most coveted and sought after watches made by A. Lange & Söhne in recent years. The semi-opaque dial coupled with large luminous elements certainly makes for a very striking and mesmerizing design, as well as being highly unusual for a brand that is usually much more restrained and conservatively styled. However, in the case of this Grand Lange 1 Moonphase Lumen, there is a genuinely practical reason for these design choices.

When setting out to bring luminous elements to the signature Lange 1 design, A. Lange & Söhne designers had to solve the issue of how to charge the digits to the outsized date complication. A solution that was both elegant and innovative was found: by using a smoked sapphire crystal, light could penetrate the dial and charge the luminous date discs, while being opaque enough to still read the power reserve. The same solution was used for the moon phase, resulting in full functionality of all complications in the dark.
