The refined carving and varied decorative motifs seen on the present pair of tabernacles are reminiscent of the work of the Italian goldsmith Giovanni Giardini (1646-1721). Giardini produced ornate devotional objects, such as tabernacles and holy water stoups, incorporating rare materials including a variety of coloured hardstones. His works of art were intended for private use, and one of his most illustrious patrons included Pope Clement XI.
The decoration of the present pair of tabernacles is meant to imitate these sumptuous materials. The, along with the elaborate wood finishes, is representative of late Roman Baroque style.
