Description
Property from an Important Private Collection, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Italian, in Renaissance style
Casket
bronze
height: 8 ⅝ in.; 21.9 cm.
With M. and R. Stora, Paris, 22 June 1926;
Ralph H. Booth, Detroit Institute of Art.
Numerous variants of this bronze casket are recorded, with the most comprehensive list assembled by Warren.1 Several of these caskets were, in the late 19th century, ascribed to the Milanese goldsmith Caradosso Foppa (c. 1452-1526/7) like the present box was, and some also include feet in the form of turtles. However, the majority of this type (excluding the putto surmounting the lid) are now considered 19th century casts including one example in the Louvre and another 19th century the Fundación Láazaro Galdiano, Madrid.
