Introduced in 2011, the Reference 5496 is a perpetual calendar with a retrograde date hand. The first perpetual calendar with retrograde date was launched in 1937 in the ref. 96. In 1993, Patek Philippe introduced the reference 5050 with its distinctive retrograde date indicator, the hand taking a month to trace the arc between 8 and 4 o’clock. Both also show the day and month in apertures on the three to nine o’clock axis, with the Ref. 5050 having the additional benefit of a subtle leap-year indicator just below twelve o’clock. This same display can be seen in the Ref. 5496, powered by the 324 S QR.
