The Charlier and Cortina Collection of Exotic Samurai Helmets and Armour
A Saiga-bachi [Saiga school helmet]
Momoyama - Edo period, late 16th - early 17th century
the Haruta school red lacquered iron bowl in head-shaped form (zunari) with eight plates and seated rivets (zaboshi), the apex comprising of plates to form a stylised chrysanthemum, red lacquered peak and small turnbacks, four-tiered red lacquered neck guard of solid plates (itamono-jikoro) with spaced lacing (sugake odoshi) in pale orange braid, gilt wood forecrest (maedate) in the form of stylised horns (kuwagata), later, accompanied with a fitted wood stand as illustrated
The helmet when mounted on a stand: 84.5 cm., 33¼ in high (including fittings)
