Washington was a prolific painter of North African views, exhibiting them regularly at the annual Paris Salon from the late 1850s onwards. He became famous for his animated equestrian scenes of Berber and Touareg horsemen, hunting or returning from a raid or razzia. Like Fromentin and Huguet, Washington was inspired by the bravura, dynamic brushstroke, and dramatic palette of Eugène Delacroix.
