diameter 9 1/8 in.; 23.2 cm

The Century House, London
Bernard and S. Dean Levy, New York
Christie's New York, 23-24 January 2002, lot 135

For the arms and an example from the same service, see David Sanctuary Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, Vol. II, Chippenham, 2003, p. 173, F4. The Anti-Gallican Society was formed in London first in 1745, and re-established in 1757. Howard suggests that bowls of this type with the gilt vine border to the interior was possibly ordered in the first year of the Society's history. The purpose of the Society was to promote British made commodities and resist and discourage French imported goods. As documented by Howard, there are several different known types of bowl made for the Society, with differences in the central horse rider as well as the motto inscribed.

An example with identical in decoration but with a gilt shell, leaf and scroll border, was first sold in these rooms, January 24th, 1990, lot 404, and subsequently purchased by James F. Scott, and later sold again from his collection in these rooms, 15 October 2018, lot 144. Another large pair, one formerly in the collection of Cecil H. Bullivant and the other formerly in the collection of T. H. Kapnek, was assembled by Andrew Hartnagle and the pair sold in these rooms, 3-12 August 2020, lot 315. A further example painted with the same arms but with a spearhead border, measuring approximately 10 inches in diameter, was sold in our London rooms, February 27th, 1973, lot 286.
