The largely self-taught sculptor Joseph von Kopf was active in Würzburg and in Rome before settling in Baden-Baden. His oeuvre included busts and statues of German royalty, allegorical figures, as well as works after the antique such as the present large bronze, which was cast by the prestigious Nelli foundry in Rome.
