According to Cipriani's inscription, he made this drawing for Gaetano Stefano Bartolozzi, an Italian engraver who was the son of the better known Francesco Bartolozzi.


Cipriani himself was Italian. In 1755 he had been persuaded to come to England by the architect Sir William Chambers and the sculptor Joseph Wilton. In 1769 he became one of the founding members of the Royal Academy.
