190 by 149 mm
In the present drawing Lawrence depicts the young nobleman in his late teens. Lord Douglas and Clydesdale, as he was styled until the death of this father in 1852, was educated at Eton and Oxford. In 1843 he married Princess Marie Amélie of Baden, daughter of the Grand Duke Charles of Baden and Stéphanie de Beauharnais, the adopted daughter of Napoleon I. After his marriage he lived chiefly in Paris and Baden.
This drawing is connected with Lawrence's chalk drawing of the Marquess and his sister, Lady Susan, which was engraved by F.C. Lewis in 1830.1
