John William Godward, a painter known for his Pre-Raphaelite and Neo-Classicist style, was born in the Wimbledon district of London, United Kingdom, in 1861.

This demure portrait of a woman in Grecian-inspired dress exemplifies the artist's ability to accurately paint various textures, from fabric to stone. Posed before a crème-colored variegated marble wall, she wears a pink dress with green ribbon and pearl fibulae buttons to hold her golden tunic. The entire composition is harmoniously calibrated such that the colors of her costume match the rosy warmth of her complexion and the striated coolness of the marble behind her.
