Leonie Rysanek (1926-1998) was one of the foremost dramatic sopranos of the 20th century. After studying voice in Vienna, she made her debut in 1949 as Agathe in Der Freischüzt. Rysanek was renowned for interpreting some of the most demanding roles in the repertoire such as Sieglinde in Die Walküre, Kundry in Parsifal, the Empress in Frau ohne Schatten and the title role in Salome. She frequently performed at the Bayreuther Festspielen during the 1950s and 60s. In 1956, she was awarded the prestigious title of Kammersängerin by the Austrian government. Over the course of her extraordinarily long career, she appeared at the Vienna State Opera from 1955 to 1991 and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York from 1959 to 1996.
