This portrait is a high quality studio copy of the bust from Lawrence's full-length portrait of West, now in the Wadsworth Athenaeum.1 The full-length version was commissioned by the American Academy of Fine Art, New York in 1818 and completed after West's death in 1820, at which time Lawrence succeeded West as President of the Royal Academy.
