Archibald Knox (1864-1933) was one of Liberty's designers at the peak of the influential department store's popularity in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century. He mainly created gem-studded decorative art objects in pewter, their fluid and energetic designs typical of the European-wide movement known as Art Nouveau. However, he also creatively fused this Art Nouveau spirit with elements of Celtic design, and was particularly inspired by the traditional art of his native Isle of Man. Knox was chosen to design the gravestone for Sir Arthur Lasenby Liberty, the founder of the great department store that bore his name and that made Knox's style so well-known, upon his death in 1917.
