the top rails with foliate carved detail, the arm terminals of sphinx form, the square front legs terminating in block feet and the square back legs outsplayed, each stencilled to the inside back rail LB (the mark for the Duchesse de Bourbon, Louise Bathilde d'Orléans) beneath a crown, the canapé with two additional and partially indistinct marks reading ARC (the mark for the château d'Arc-en-Barrois) and an illegible pencil inscription, re-gilt
