Johnson was an attorney and politician from California, who served as that state's 23rd Governor (1911 to 1917), and represented California in the U.S. Senate for five terms (1917 until his death in 1945). He was also Teddy Roosevelt's running mate on the "Bull Moose" presidential ticket in 1912.
