Engraved frontispiece portrait of Washington by Amos Doolittle after a painting by Joseph Wright, woodcut vignette on title-page after embroidered mourning pictures memorializing Washington; title-page stained, light text browning throughout, faint dampstaining to fore-edges of few leaves, last 2 leaves foxed and stained. Disbound. Quarter brown morocco slipcase and cloth chemise.
First edition of this Washington funeral discourse by Connecticut historian and pastor of the North Haven Congregational Church, Benjamin Trumbull. This particular sermon is valuable for the extended historical footnotes relating to troops and engagements, including the Battle of Lexington, the evacuation of Boston, and the loss of men sustained by the town of New Haven.
