Augustin de Saint-Aubin was a prolific printmaker and highly accomplished draughtsman. He trained under his brother and later with Étienne Fessard and Nicolas-Henry Tardieu, who were both engravers. In 1776, he was appointed as Dessinateur et Graveur to the Bibliothèque Royale, and subsequently became the engraver for the Duc d'Orléans.

The present drawing is one of several of the artist’s wife. A pair of portraits of Augustin and his wife were sold at Sotheby’s in New York in 20011.
