Description
AN INSCRIBED GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF THE 7TH TAI SITUPA LAMA
TIBET, 17TH – 18TH CENTURY
十七至十八世紀 藏傳鎏金銅廣定大司徒巴喇嘛七世坐像
25.8 cm, 10 in.
The inscription around the base reveals the figure to be Lekshe Mawe Nyima (1683–1698), the 7th Tai Situpa Lama. It reads:
'rgyal yum snying po sbas don pad mo' tshi la//
legs par 'byed mkhas smra ba'i nyi ma mchog//
mtha' bral mchog gi bde 'di zhang zhung gi/
gtsug phud blo bzang rab brtan bdag gis bzhengs//'
It can be translated as
"This apparition body of Prajnaparamita affixed to a lotus, Legshe Mawai Nyima, of supreme limitlessness bliss, was commissioned by the patron Tsukphu Lobsang Rabten of Zhang Zhung".
