Hubert Verbelen, Sint Truiden;
private collection, Belgium
Marked with the Antwerp Hand, this moving group would have been situated at the foot of the Crucifixion within a large altarpiece. While the composition of Saint John supporting the fainting Virgin alongside the two other Marys is a stock motif in retables made in early 16th-century Antwerp, the quality of carving and high level of detail in the physiognomies, draperies and Mary Magdalene's headdress distinguish the present relief as a particularly fine work from the Antwerp school.
