Collected by Jean-Claude Ciancimino (1931-2014) in 1964.
Ex-collection Seward Kennedy (1925-2015), New York.

This painting depicts a Jain yantra, a diagram that integrates incantations (mantras) together with images of deities. They are used for tantric and meditative practices and are an aide to the attainment of enlightenment. This is an example of a Siddhachakra Mayayantra, a large scale yantra, that is depicted as a kalasha pot with an eye on either side.

For comparable yantra see J. Jain and E. Fischer, Jaina Iconography, 1978, Part 2 and P. Pal, The Peaceful Liberators: Jain art from India, Los Angeles, 1995, p.80, no.49.
