Arabic manuscript on paper, 302 leaves, plus 4 fly-leaves, 17 lines to the page of neat naskh written in black ink, arranged in 2 roundels framed by gold arabesques, ruled in gold and black, verses separated by gold roundels decorated with red and blue dots, surah headings written in white thuluth on gold and polychrome illuminated panels, further text divisions marked in margins with illuminated floral devices, catchwords, opening bifolio illuminated in gold and polychrome, colophon signed and dated in an illuminated panel, in brown gilt binding with flap, red leather doublures


15 by 7.7cm.

This Qur’an has an unusual format with the text divided into roundels, bordered by elegant gold illumination throughout. A similar format is shown in a Qur’an sold in these rooms, 6 April 2011, lot 201. A further Qur’an displaying the same text format was sold at Christie’s, London, 7 April 2011, lot 316.


The colophon states that our scribe was the student of Mehmed al-Wahbi Efendi, and that this is the eleventh manuscript of the Qur’an completed by the scribe.
