Huseyin Hilmi Efendi was the court astronomer during the reign of Sultan Mehmed V Reshad (1909-18). He worked as the last royal astronomer at the Ottoman court from 1909 to 1924.

During the Gallipolli campaign in the First World War, the Allied powers attempted to weaken the Ottoman Empire by taking control of the Turkish straits. Huseyin Hilmi Efendi predicted that the Ottoman army would defeat enemy forces at the battle at Çanakkale Strait which ended on 9 January 1916. This almanac is of great significance for Turkish history as it was commissioned by Sultan Mehmed V Reshad after Efendi’s accurate prediction that Istanbul would not be captured by the Allies.
