Description

pencil and opaque watercolour on watermarked paper, two with J WHATMAN watermark, the first depicting inlaid decoration from the cenotaph of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, inscribed in brown ink along lower edge ‘No.1 Base of the Elevation of Shaw Jehauns Tomb’, the second depicting decoration from the cenotaph of Mumtaz Mahal, inscribed in brown ink at lower right corner ‘No.1./Base of the Elevation/of the Sultana’s Tomb’, the reverse with ‘No. 4’, the third depicting decoration from the apex of a dome within a tomb chamber, inscribed indistinctly in pencil along lower edge ‘Apex …(?) of dome’, the reverse with ‘JG Hoare’ in ink

Shah Jahan’s cenotaph: 75 by 53.8cm.

Mumtaz Mahal’s cenotaph: 65.3 by 85cm.

Apex of a dome: 46.5 by 59.8cm.
