The Left-Handed Gun

Portrait of Hurd Hatfield by Joanne Woodward

Black and white photographic print (sight: 9 1/16 x 7 1/16 in.; framed: 14 1/8 x 11 7/8 in.), matted, framed, and glazed; inscribed in black ink on the reverse: "Hurd Hatfield / in / "The Left-Handed Gun" / Photo by Joanne / Woodward / 1955"

Hurd Hatfield is best known for having played characters of handsome, narcissistic young men, most notably Dorian Gray in the film The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945). Though his starring role in The Picture of Dorian Gray should have propelled him to stardom, it had the opposite effect, leading Hatfield to take a nearly decade-long hiatus from Hollywood in 1950. He returned to the screen in 1958 in Arthur Penn's Western drama The Left-Handed Gun (1958) starring Paul Newman, Lita Milan, and John Dehner, as the brilliantly sly partner of outlaw Billy the Kid (played by Newman) Moultrie, pictured here.
