GIMME SHELTER (1970) NEW YORK PREMIERE POSTER, US

Photography by Gered Mankowitz (b. 1946)

35⅜x 25⅜in. (90 x 64.5 cm)

Gimme Shelter is a documentary about the Rolling Stones' 1969 US tour, including the tragic events at the Altamont Free Concert. The film is named after the signature track Gimme Shelter, from the album Let It Bleed. This poster was printed for the New York premiere of the film. The image of The Rolling Stones was taken from a 1965 photo-shoot by London music photographer Gered Mankowitz in Ormond Yard, London. Interestingly, the image has nothing to do with the 1969 tour or the documentary. The main release poster is completely different and shows an image of the band in concert. Exceptionally rare Rolling Stones premiere poster, that has only surfaced a few times.
