Set of five candid color photographs of Sugarhill Records taken by Roosevelt Dmite Simmons, a close associate of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five who played a critical role as the group's hype man and road manager, spending extensive time traveling and hanging out with them, ca. 1980-1982:
1. 5 by 7 (12.7 x 17.8 cm.), Joe Robinson (co-founder of Sugar Hill Records with Melle Mel), good condition.
2. 5 by 7 (12.7 x 17.8 cm.), Sylvia Robinson (co-founder of Sugar Hill Records), slight discoloration on back corner.
3. 4 by 6 (10.2 x 15.2 cm.), Grandmaster Flash spinning in DJ booth at Disco Fever, "PRINT MADE BY KODAK APR 82" stamp and small tape piece on back.
4. 4 by 6 (10.2 x 15.2 cm.), Milton Malden (co-founder of Sugar Hill Records), scuffs and slight discoloration on front and back.
5. 3.5 by 3.5 (8.9 x 8.9 cm), Grandmaster Flash, Disco B, Junebug, Sweet G, unknown woman, right edge cut askew, top and bottom left corners worn, discoloration on back.
Founded 1979 by husband and wife Joe and Sylvia Robinson (along with rarely seen co-founder Milton Malden), Sugar Hill Records' first record was the incomparable "Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang. The song was the first-ever top 40 Hip Hop single, and the label would go on to produce hits for Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Funky Four Plus One, Treacherous Three, and many more.
