A silver and gold cigarette box, Alfred William Hardiman, London, 1929


Rectangular, with linear design, the lid inlaid with two bands of rose gold,

Alfred William Hardiman (12 September 1865 – 23 November 1948), one of the children of Alfred James Hardiman (1843-1932), sometime silversmith/metal brazier in Clerkenwell, was married at St. Mark, Shoreditch on 25 August 1889 to Ada Ann (1868-1934), daughter of William Myhill (1843-1932), a Norfolk farmer. He entered his first mark on 26 September 1908 (Culme, no. 1293) and is recorded in the 1911 Census as a silversmith small worker, living at 71 Kelvin Road, Highgate, London, N., with his wife and two sons, Alfred Frank (1891-1949), the noted sculptor, and Arthur Leonard (1899-1985).
