turned to his left, with full parted lips, deep-set eyes, and prominent brow, the short hair freely carved; no restorations.

The present head represents an athlete, recognizable by his swollen ears. The complete figure was circa 105 cm high and could have been part of a funerary monument. For the rendering of the facial features compare the head of the youth from the so-called Ilissos-stele (J. Bergemann, Demos und Thanatos, 1997, pl. 94,4), or the head offered at Sotheby’s, London, June 13th, 2016, no. 8.
