These elaborately detailed ornaments likely take their form from depictions of Vishnu’s mount, Garuda, the great solar bird. The form of this object is speculated to come from the crown that Garuda is often depicted to be wearing, a very good example being a sculpture found in Brooke’s Point, Palawan in the southern Philippines. The naturalistic depiction was soon stylised to the point that the original form was completely transformed, something that occurs very often in the development of Javanese motifs. The objects here, for instance, no longer possess the original triangular form, one being circular (lot 1066) and one being hexagonal (present lot). However, they still both feature the wavy band and the elaborate floral designs seen on the original.
