Description

Follower of Caravaggio, first half of the 17th Century

Supper at Emmaus

Oil on canvas

98 x 126 cm ; 38⅝ by 49⅝ in.

In the same collection for at least four generations, Spain.

A painting of the same subject in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Pau (inv. 60.1), which had long remained anonymous and which gave its name to the Master of the Emmaus of Pau, is now associated with the work of the Neapolitan painter Filippo Vitale. It bears certain similarities to our Supper at Emmaus in its strictly triangular composition, constructed around the table with its white cloth and the frontal view of Christ.

This link with Vitale’s art could be corroborated by the recent auction sale of another version – of lesser quality – which is probably a copy after the present work and is thought to be from the workshop of Filippo Vitale (Wannenes Gênes sale, 18 June 2024, lot 121).
