A Chimera Devouring a Bird
Engraving, circa 1580-1610, a fine impression of this scarce, sculptural subject, on thin laid paper without watermark, unframed
plate: 75 by 132mm 3 by 5¼in
sheet: 187 by 258mm 7⅜ by 10⅛in
Though apparently created as a standalone engraving, this work can be linked to Maglioli's suite of Sea Monsters housed at the Rijksmuseum. While the mythical chimera is typically depicted with the head of a lion, this particular creature's head is that of a dog, who turns away to devour his feathered prize in peace.
