The chased hunting scene within scrollwork on the lid of the present lot has traditionally been associated with the work of Dutch goldsmiths due to its similarity to the style of Johannes van der Lely, Leeuwarden. The 18th century production of gold boxes in the Netherlands is, however, unlike that of works of art in silver, fairly limited, compared to the main centres of production such as France, England and Germany. This was partially due to the preference for pipe smoking over taking snuff in the Netherlands. The chased scenes on gold boxes like the present lot were in fact often based on prints, such as those of Johann Elias Ridinger (1698-1767), which were widely available in both the Netherlands and Germany at the time.
