Jean Béraud was an attentive observer of Parisian life and ardent chronicler of the Belle Époque, capturing the city's bustling streets and quintessential characters. Here, an alert and elegantly dressed young woman holds the reins atop a horse drawn carriage, accompanied by a rather recalcitrant young man whose dress denotes sophistication but whose pose suggests some kind of resignation. This modern pair leads a line of carriages, shuttling urbanites across the city's newly broadened boulevards.
