Picturesque Tour of the Seine from Paris to the Sea. London: R. Ackermann, 1821
4to (13 1/8 x 10 1/2 in.; 335 x 270 mm). Title-page with handcolored engraved vignette, 24 handcolored aquatint views by T. Sutherland and D. Havell after A. Pugin and J. Gendall, handcolored map of the Seine, dedication leaf, subscriber's list; some toning, light offsetting from plates to text, occasional light offsetting to plates, chiefly on the verso. Contemporary straight-grain red morocco, elaborate filleted border, inner frame of gilt acanthus leaves and leafy roll in blind, spine with slightly raised bands gilt, brown endpapers, edges gilt; joints rubbed, text block expertly re-secured to casing.
First edition of one of Ackermann's most successful projects
Picturesque Tour of the Seine was first issued in six months parts, and featured a series of striking images by the renowned landscape artist Augustus Charles Pugin.
