German Formula 1 driver Sebastian Vettel secured 122 podium finishes, 53 race victories, and won 4 World Championships during his distinguished racing career. The notorious speedster spent time at BMW Sauber, Toro Rosso, Red Bull, Ferrari, and Aston Martin as he developed a reputation as one of the world’s fastest and most successful drivers.
The early years of Vettel’s professional career saw the German achieve a nearly unprecedented level of success. After joining Red Bull in 2009, Vettel embarked on an incredible run that saw him win 4 consecutive World Championships from 2010-2013. It marked the 2nd most consecutive championships for a driver in the history of the sport. He was only 26 years old at the time.
After struggling to replicate this success in 2014, Vettel decided the time had come for a change and switched to Ferrari. The 2015 season saw him return to top form as Vettel secured 3 race victories, 13 podium finishes, and finished 3rd in the overall standings.
Sotheby’s is proud to present the racing helmet worn by Vettel during qualifying for the 2015 Monaco Grand Prix. The race was held from May 21-24, 2015 at Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo. Vettel finished in 2nd position and earned 18 points for his spot on the podium.
Vettel once again mounted serious challenges for the World Championship in both 2017 and 2018 but ultimately finished in 2nd place on both occasions. He eventually joined Aston Martin in 2021 where he remained competitive for two seasons before announcing that he would retire following the 2022 season. Vettel’s 4 World Championships are tied for third all-time in the history of Formula 1 and he remains the youngest driver (23 years old) to win a Formula 1 World Championship. He will go down as one of the best drivers the sport has ever seen.
The helmet has been photomatched by Resolution Photomatching to an image taken during qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix on May 23, 2015. Resolution also photomatched the helmet to an image from a practice session on May 21, 2015. A photomatch letter and graphics accompany the helmet.
