A kuwagata-nari kawari kabuto [unusually shaped helmet]
Momoyama - Edo period, late 16th - early 17th century
the polished black-lacquered iron bowl with hammered eye brows towards the mabisashi [peak], the crown formed in harikake as kuwagata [stylised horns] pierced with inome-bori [boar's eye openings], five-tiered black lacquer itamono Hineno-jikoro [close fitted neck guard with solid plates] with sugake odoshi [spaced lacing] in dark blue braid, the black and gold lacquer maedate [forecrest] in the form of a gunbai [war fan] with inscription
The bowl to peak: 26.5 cm., 10½ in.
The shikoro to peak: 30 cm., 11⅞ in.
