The moon phases indication is not a function that is in Rolex’s tradition. In the history of Rolex’s production there have only been a combined total of 3 models granted this complication. Reference 6062, 8171 and the most recently released Cellini at the Baselworld fair in 2017.
The present watch reference 8171, in production in the early 50s was nicknamed the “Padellone” or “big frying pan” by collectors for its uniquely large and thin case. Although the Padellone is available in pink gold, yellow gold and stainless steel, it is very difficult to source one today, especially one of such great condition. The reason being, its early non-waterproof case would permit moisture from the air to naturally tarnish the silvered dial.
The present watch, in very nice original condition, is fitted with yellow gold numeral markers and 'Precision' on the subsidiary seconds dial. Hardly worn over the years, the case remains incredibly crisp with the lightest of polish as the Rolex Coronet and case numbers to the case back are still visible with the naked eye that is a very important aspect to determine the quality of a 8171. Extremely wearable and one of the most sought-after wristwatches today, this triple calendar Rolex will no doubt be a jewel for all collections.
