Portraits of Francesco Petrarca, also known as Petrarch, were popular subjects for Florentine painters of the sixteenth century. Some of the most famous examples of the poet's likeness can be found in Giorgio Vasari’s group portrait of Six Tuscan Poets (Minneapolis Institute of Art, inv. no. 71.24)1 and Agnolo Bronzino’s allegorical portrait series of Petrarch, Dante and Boccaccio, that he painted for his beloved friend Bartolomeo Bettini.
