Private Collection, Rhode Island;

Marguerite Riordan, Stonington, Connecticut.

This painting depicts two sloops racing while Castle William on Governor’s Island fires a salute to two American ships of the line as they are towed into harbor. The two deck ship is most likely the South Carolina; the only American two deck ship of the line circa 1870-80. The two sloops are of typical racing craft design of the 1870s and fly opposing yacht club burgees atop their main masts. The masts, lines, and running rigging are in precise relief, a hallmark of the artist’s passion for accuracy.
